TREE TOPS

Half the interest of a garden is the constant exercise of the imagination.
— MRS. C.W. EARLE, POT-POURRI FROM A SURREY GARDEN, 1897

In the heart of Hunting Valley’s Daisy Hill, a residence built in 2012 holds the memory of its intent as a part of the original Van Sweringen estate. The new house nods to the estate’s original 1920s Norman style. Extraordinary custom inlaid stonework and fanciful ironwork offer dramatic punctuation to the landscape design. The entry drive leads to an auto court nestled by a large stone retaining wall. A herringbone brick walk winds in a gardenesque manner from the garage court to the rear of house where the design shifts to more fanciful. An arched iron arbor frames a stone fountain flanked by whimsical piped dancing bears and cheerful frogs. Just beyond are the pool and spa terraces, with custom curvilinear iron railings echoing the fountain’s arcs. The subtle rise of the pool and spa area allows for a stunning perched view of the surrounding meadow.
