HUNTING VALLEY

Great design is a multi-layered relationship between human life and its environment.
— NAOTO FUKASAWA

A country home situated in the Chagrin River watershed exemplifies the American ideal of blending to create a new original style, expertly preserving a distinctive sense of regional character alongside thoughtful modernizations suited for a young family. Originally part of the Connecticut Western Reserve, the residence’s design mixes references to the settlers’ New England communities with elements of the Georgian-Federal style and emerging Greek Revival Period.  The landscape architecture reflects these layered influences deployed in thoughtful response to the unique environmental features of the area. Naturalized Lilac, Mock-Orange and Virginia Sweetspire, set the foreground to a picturesque clumping of Red Maples. Sweeping views of the landscape arrange the property into a Georgian-Federal Style garden vernacular. Hints of more formalized boxwoods and privet hedges nod to the emerging Greek Revival of the early 19th century, which is regarded as America’s first truly indigenous style. Use of local sandstone and timbers native to the Chagrin Valley region adhere to the pragmatic aesthetics of settler communities.
